Mind - Friend or Enemy?

Mind - Friend or Enemy?

December 26, 2012

Bad Antogast, Germany

Q: How to overcome the mind which bothers me?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: That is its nature.
Do you know you are bigger than the mind? Wake up. Let the mind be there.

Q: Gurudev, how do I recognize my soul mate?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: First you should recognize your soul and then your soul mate.
You don’t know yourself, you don’t know who you are. You don’t know anything about yourself. You don’t know your mind; your own mind drives you crazy.
One minute it wants something and the next minute it wants something else. The mind keeps changing its mind all the time, and it gets caught up.
That is why in the Bhagavad Gita, there is a saying, 'Your own mind is responsible for your bondage and for your liberation,' there is nothing else.
Your own mind, if it acts like your friend, it also acts like your enemy.
If your mind is trained well through Sadhana (spiritual practices), it befriends you, and it helps you. Otherwise your own mind behaves like an enemy. Isn't this so true? It is so true!

I want to tell you an incident that happened last week, just before I came here.
In front of the Ashram we have a signboard of the Ashram. It so happened that a particular political party, their people came and put their posters on that signboard, just to create mischief.
They put big posters because there was a birthday party of the head of that political party. So our security people and others, naturally they pulled it down because people coming to the ashram couldn't see the signboard and didn't know where to go.
Now, the local leader of the party got very wild and he started screaming and threatening one of our teachers saying , I’m going to bring a lot of people and we will have a demonstration. And in front of that we will do hunger strike', and these very angry exchange of words happened. And our security people also said, 'Yes, you come. Let us see, we are also very strong.'

So, when I was driving to the city for another program, my secretary told me this story. I told him, 'Call this local leader and talk to him.'
So my secretary called him and told him, 'Gurudev has just come, he wants you to take a basket full of fruits, a garland and a shawl for the person who has a birthday, and give him blessings from Gurudev', and he agreed.
Then he asked, 'Why did they pull out our posters?'
My secretary played innocent and said, 'Oh, you had some difficulty, is it so?! Why didn't you tell me? You should have informed me. Gurudev has just come, he was on a tour. He heard there was a birthday party and he wants to send blessing. So you go and take these things to your leader and give him blessings.'
The whole situation got diffused and he felt very empowered. So now he could go to his boss with a garland and blessings from me, and he also got access to his superior in the party.

All the big drama he was going to create ended with one phone call. He could go to the boss of his party with pride and say, 'Gurudev has sent me to give you a garland.'
So, he felt empowered and our people felt relieved.
See, when you know how you can diffuse conflicts, it is easy.
All that it cost was a phone call. But not every trick works everywhere. In different places you have to work differently. Sometime you have to take a tough stand, put your foot down and say no. Sometimes you have to be diplomatic and skillful.Always there will be people who try to create mischief, you need to have skill to handle all those situations.

The ancient people said that there are four ways to deal with any situation - Sama, Dana, Bheda and Danda.
1. Sama means with dialogue, with persuasion, with some discussion and communication
2. Dana means forgiving. 'Never mind, everybody makes mistakes', and so you give them a chance
3. Bheda means being indifferent. Being a little tough and making a point
4. Danda mean taking a stick, which is the last resort
Usually we use the last two ways in beginning itself. We don’t go with the harmonious path. You must first take the harmonious path, and then give a chance, and then discriminate, and finally, if nothing works, Danda, which is take a stick.
These are called the four skillful ways of handling any situation.

Q: Gurudev, you have said that we shouldn't give explanations to people. But if we have something on our heart that is heavy and feel the need to talk about it, then what to do?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: There is no one rule for it, sometime you want to speak and become calm and sometimes speaking doesn't help in any way.
Wake up and see, the whole world is like a dream. All those thoughts have gone, the behavior of people will disappear. Some people act good and some act bad, but everyone is going to die, and the world will be finished.
This set of people will all go away. Then new people will come and they will all die. Then another set of people will come, they will fight among themselves, they will hug, love, kiss, do everything, and they will all die.
Seven billion people on the planet today and all these seven billion people will all die. It is only a matter of a few years. In another hundred years, do you think the same people will be here? Not one person who is here today will be alive. And two hundred years later, even the grandchildren will not be there.
See, the world is like a river, there is fresh water flowing every moment in this river. What is it that you are so bothered about?
If you want to leave something behind, it should be some knowledge that would help someone; that would be useful to someone. Not what he said, what she said, and what do you think about so-and-so situation. Come on, this is all nonsense! Throw them out of the window. It has no meaning.

Hours together you waste in explaining, why you felt the way you were feeling and how and why others are feeling the way they are feeling.
Do you know, when the time changes, the mind also changes. There is a beautiful science about this. You can also get a clue from the astrological chart, how the mind is connected with time.
Sometime, we will start a course on the connection between mind, time and the planets. See, I don’t want to say astrology because it has been misused and misinterpreted so many times. It is a one of the most disorganized science today.
No doubt astrology is a science but it has been distorted so much that you can’t even see what the original is.
There are twelve constellations and nine planets according to Vedic astrology.
It is said that when Jupiter transits in the eighth place from the time you are born, it has an impact on your mind.

Similarly, when Saturn transits the eighth place, it makes your emotions go topsy-turvy.
When Jupiter is in the eighth place, you lose all your wisdom. But that is only for eleven months, and in these eleven months, it is only for three months that it makes you so miserable. Unless and until you are in deep spiritual knowledge or enlightened, this will definitely affect your mind.
But if you know, 'These are the three months that are going to be a little difficult on my mind and emotions', then you will not take decisions, or do thing in those months.
Similarly, every two and a half days, the mood of the mind changes.
If you are miserable, it won't exceed two and half days. There will be a break and then it may come again.

Like this, the cosmos has an influence on the mind.
What can protect you from this influence is satsang, meditation, chanting. All this is like putting on an armour.
An arrow was coming, but you have an armor, so it didn't really hit you.
So, singing and chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya' so many times makes an armour around you and protects you from being affected by all these crazy things.
We do Yagnas in the Bangalore Ashram for the welfare of the whole world and for all of our devotees. There is a small Yagna done six times every month, and during Navratri we do a big one to bring peace, prosperity and protection to the world and all our devotees.
These are the ways of the ancient people. We will have more knowledge and courses on this in the future.

Q: Where do the thoughts come from?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: This thought came to you just now? Where did this thought come from? It came in you, so why don’t you sit and see, where it is coming from?
The moment you sit and think what is the origin of thought the mind goes blank. That indicates from where thoughts are coming.
You are the source from where thoughts, ideas and emotions come – that inner space.
It is like someone asking, 'Where do the clouds come from?'
Clouds are just hovering in the sky. In the same way, in our inner sky, there are three akashas – one is the outer space, the second is the inner space where thoughts and emotion come, and there is the third space which is a witness. Where there is nothing, just bliss.

Q: How to get a faith that never shakes?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: If it is true faith, let it shake.
Truth will never go, and if the faith is with the truth, let it shake. It will never get lost.
In fact, you should doubt as much as possible.
You can say, 'Don’t doubt', only when a thing is not a genuine thing.
If it is genuine gold, I tell you, go on scratching as much as possible. But if it is just rolled in gold, or gold polish, then you say, 'Don’t scratch too much because it will disappear.'
With true gold, any amount of scratching will not make it go away.
Doubt is simply lack of energy. When you are high in energy, where is the doubt?
Doubt comes when the energy is low. True faith is that which you shake a hundred times and it still stays on. That is true faith, and it will remain.

Q: You said we come to the Ashram and regenerate - why is the world not an Ashram?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: To me the world is my Ashram.
But when you come in a physical place, or in an Ashram where there is always meditation happening, that place holds those vibrations.
See in your home, there is a place for dining, a place for resting, and a place for garbage. Like that, in the world, there is a place for everything.
I would love everyone of you to make your home an Ashram. And what is an Ashram? It is a place where there is wisdom and where there is love. It is a place where anybody who comes is welcomed and given some food so that they can come and relax.

If you can create such a power then the whole world is an Ashram. In fact, when you go and be with nature in the forest or in the woods, it is all an Ashram only.
I say that every tree in the world is in my own garden; in my own ashram. This is the fact, but sometimes when you feel that this is not helping, that you need a place where you can go and energize yourself, then you come here (Ashram).
It will be very obvious for you to feel the energy here. Just like in your home, you can be anywhere, but if you want to feel the aroma of food, you have to walk into the kitchen. You can eat anywhere, but in kitchen or dining area, the aroma is there.

Q: Does the soul have an aim?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Yes, the soul definitely has an aim, to become one with the super-soul. The small mind's aim is to become one with the big mind.
Every wave wants to wash the shore and become one with the ocean, which it already is!

Q: What is time?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: The distance between two events.
What is distance, if you ask me, it is the space between two objects.

Q: How to go back to the source?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Just by being quiet, unlearning and unwinding you will get back to the source.

Q: Can you tell us about Kali Yuga.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: There are four Yugas; time is divided into four aspects.
1. Satya Yuga, when there is a lot of positivity
2. Treta Yuga, when the positivity goes a little down
3. Dvapara Yuga, when the positivity goes a little more down, and
4. Kali Yuga, when positivity goes down even more
This is what is said about Kali Yuga. But I tell you, within Kali Yuga there is Satya Yuga.
The days when you feel happy, know that you are in Satya Yuga. And when you are totally miserable, you are in Kali Yuga.
In that sense, within the big Kali Yuga also, there are good times.

Q: You said truth is contradictory. Can you give us an easy way to understand this?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Milk is good and milk is bad.
Milk is good if you drink one glass, bad if you drink two litres. Got it?!
If you come to Bad Antogast from Freudenstadt, you have to go straight down and turn to your right. But from Oppenau, you have to go straight and turn left.
Both instructions are true, but they are contradictory.
Truth is spherical, it is not linear. When anything is spherical there are multiple ways to get to that.

Q: Is India on the verge of becoming the country it was 2,000 years ago?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: If the politicians let it happen, it will.
The politicians have become a problem in Italy, in India, and in Greece. It is the politicians who are driving the country towards bankruptcy.
Each country has enough resources and good people. There is dynamism, but corruption is taking the nations to a primitive, medieval era.

如果你是從 Freudenstadt(德國地方名)來到Bad Antogast(德國地方名),你需要走直然後右轉。但是如果你從Oppenau(德國地方名)來的話,你就要直走然後左轉。

New Year Wish

New Year Wish

Q: Guruji, What should be our prayer for the new year?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: In the New Year, wish for happiness in which you can serve and share so that it grows and if any trouble or misery comes, they come, like day and night, they are part of the world, ask for the strength to be centered. Willingness to serve when joy arises should be the wish. Not that the whole year everything should be rosy, that does not really happen that way. Most of the days will be one way or another. So with this prayer or wish, you will see the days of trouble will be very few, if at all, and they will only bring about the skills from within you, make you more skillful, strong and beautiful. That's the practical way. So the New Year, learn from the previous year and move on to the New Year knowing you are timeless and those moments of meditation that you experience that timelessness. That is when the events don’t touch you, emotions don’t shake you, thoughts don’t disturb you, nothing whatsoever throws you off balance. In that serene space that you are, repose! Then neither pleasure nor pain touches you. You go beyond the duality.

More satsang and seva is the way to reduce misery. Satsang and seva. We are so fortunate. We have this opportunity to even think, discuss knowledge and have an experience of that inner space. Imagine those billions of people who never know how to close their eyes and be peaceful, to take a dip in that inner serenity even for a moment! For us it is so natural to be happy and peaceful. For those who do not know how to be peaceful, it like those insomnia patients who are so restless and tired, so tired and exhausted with everything around them but so restless they don't know how to rest or sleep! Can you imagine that sort of situation? That's where your intervention is so precious, so much is needed. Many times you don't have to talk much. Just you being around people who are not so peaceful brings them that wave of peace, that relief that they are looking for!

Good Or Bad

Q) If opposite values are complementary, then am I good or bad or am I both?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Why do you put labels of `good' and `bad' on yourself? Take it off and be natural, be at peace.

Choices 選擇

The choice is always between good and the best or bad and worse. Choice is never between good and bad. When there is a good and bad in front of you, there is no choice. Your choice is only between bad and worse or good and the best. And when it is good and best, why do I have to worry so much. Okay fine, so what. Anyways it is good. The choice is always the confusion of wanting more. You know, you want more joy, more happiness, more something. It is good to have that up to certain limit. Beyond that, that becomes a cause of tension in life.

Being Friendly with everybody, is a sign of success

Being Friendly with everybody, is a sign of success

You want to hear some talk now? What topic you want me to speak? Love, Tell me, what other topic you want? Love, happiness, peace, God.. That’s all? Do you think I can talk about all these topics in next one hour? What if I know nothing about any of these topics. what will you do?

Does it really matter on what topic we are going to speak tonight? Tell me sincerely. Does it really matter? A woman from the audience: [We just want to hear you!] Topic does not matter at all.

You know we convey more through our presence. What we say in words is not that important. Do you know? Sometimes mother tells the kids, “Get lost”. she doesn’t really mean it. And the air hostess greets you and say, “Have a nice day”, they don’t mean it either. Isn’t it so?

There is another level of communication that we all have, that we have not paid much attention to. We convey through our presence, through our whole body, our whole being of vibrations. When there is a connection from that level of our being, the words do not matter.

Are you all here? Yes (from the crowd) One hundred percent. “yes” As I am speaking, do you notice that your mind is having a dialogue also? You are agreeing with me or disagreeing with me? Your mind is saying, “yes, yes, what he is saying is sense…yes I understand, I think it is right. and then, No how could that be, I don’t agree.” There is a dialogue going on. How many of you are here? may be about 375. 375 of us, have 375 dialogues at the same time. If there is a voice monitor, it would go bizarre!
It’s not just the noise here, but all the noise of the world present over here. Every possible TV station has its waves coming and making its presence right here. Do you see what I am saying?

uk Civic reception City chamber Edinburg Being friendly with everybody, is a sign of success
There is so much more to life that we don’t know. What we think is life and what we think we know, is only this much, a little bit of what the wholeness is. The scientist is astonished, the more he knows, the more unknown expands. The ancient sage once said, “Sanskrit words here, not clear!”, it means that even if you know one particle thoroughly, you will be enlightened, freedom comes to you.

There are three things to know, One, to know about GOD, second, to know about your Self, or know about a substance. Material approach and scientific approach know about a substance thoroughly. Or go into self enquiry, ask yourself who you are, what are you? How long have you been on this planet? 50yrs, 60yrs? Before that, where were you? Ask this question. Remember your age.. As I am talking, Remember your age. how old are you? You are 40, 50, 60. Where were you before that? And where will you be after another 30/40years? Are you going to be here forever?

We all have come with return ticket. Nobody has come with one way ticket. Anybody thinks that way? Anybody has plans to stay here for another thousand years? 200 years? No chance! Listen to what I’m saying? Next 30, 40yrs, where will you be? Who are you? Where will you be? Where are all those people who were here few years back. They are no more now. Where are they? Where did they come from, where did they go. Who am I? These enquiries about what is so obvious, is the knowledge about the self.

And the third one is the devotion to the unknown, the unseen, GOD. What you call GOD. Do you know what GOD means? G- Generator, O- Operator, D- Destroyer. G-O-D. That which is the basis of all creation which you don’t know about, but you feel that there is a power, that is GOD and try to know about it. There are three ways, either know about the matter, know about the Self or know the GOD. If you know anyone of this, you will reach the same point where you will know everything. All will come together. Don’t think GOD is a person sitting in the heaven trying to give you a finger, and when you try to go to Him, He goes farther away. He is there getting angry at you, trying to punish you. Forget about it all. GOD is LOVE, and Love is what you are made up of.

Today the problem in the world is all because of Love. If there is no Love there will be no problem also. You love money too much and you become greedy, You love power too much and you become power hungry. isn’t it so? You love someone too much and you become too possessive about that person. When you are possessive, then you become jealous. Love is the mother of jealousy. Love is the mother of greed. Love is the mother of fear. Love is the mother of hatred too. You cannot hate someone whom you do not love. Hatred is simply, love upside down. Fear is simply, love upside down. Are you with me? Are you all with me? [Yessssssss!] There in the back? [Yesssss!] Attentive? [Yesssss!]

If you are afraid of something, think that you have equal capacity to love also. When there is love, there is no fear. When there is fear, love goes into the background. Simply wake up and see, the whole creation loves you. The earth loves you dearly. You are held tight by the earth. Gravitational force of the earth is its love for you. Earth loves you, Air loves you, breath moves in and out of you, even when you are sleeping. If air stops loving, you cannot live. In Every atom in your body there is love, they all are together. The day they stop loving, you will disintegrate, all the atoms will move apart. The binding force of creation is Love, and you are made up of love. Everyone is seeking love, yet there is so much problem in the world, why? Because love gets distorted without knowledge, without wisdom. Isn’t that so?
IMG 5168 1024x682 Being friendly with everybody, is a sign of success
See, in a relationship if you are there to give love, rather than demand love from the other person, then you will feel better. If in a relationship you keep on demanding love, the relationship becomes sour, the love turns to hatred. Isn’t that so?
Who are you? We need to ask this ourselves. who am I? Who am I? Ask again and again, till you come to the state when you have such a smile on your face that nobody can take it away. See our smile is so fragile, just a phone call from somebody, and that’s it, you are put off. But you get into a mood, isn’t that so? We need to make our smile so strong. Everyone seems to be very serious. [laughter]

Do you know the fact that, a baby smiles 400 times a day? an adolescent smiles only 70 times a day and an adult doesn’t smile at all. That too if he gets a promotion or becomes an officer or little richer. He thinks if he smiles at somebody, they will ask something from him. If they smile at someone they might ask for some favour. So scared and fearful in life. Such life is not worth living. Sign of success is fearlessness, you know.

Being friendly with everybody, is a sign of success. Smiling is a sign of success. Not just having a big bank balance. What will you do? You spend half your health to gain wealth, and half your wealth to gain back the health. And then you keep all the money in the bank and when you kick the bucket, your children and other people will fight over what you have left behind. Life is much more than this. As long as we are alive, we should live life intensely. with joy, with enthusiasm, because life is enthusiasm. What do you say? There doesn’t seem to be any enthusiasm.

Relationship will be fruitful if they are focused on service. If husband and wife are focused on service, and not focusing on each other all the time, not policing each other all the time, then the relationship will be more successful.

Even just talking sometimes creates a lot of problem. You have some misunderstanding and you say, let’s talk it out. You sit and try to talk, and then the talking makes it more complicated, and worse, nothing gets solved. Haven’t you got that experience? Every time you try to clarify something, the doubt deepens more. Mistrust happens more. In life you should move. Life is like a river, flowing. River, takes whatever comes along. Life should be like that. Sometimes pleasant things happen, sometimes unpleasant things happen. Just flush them out and move ahead. Pleasant moments, unpleasant moments, some pleasant events, and events that you don’t like, why hang on to them? Suppose you are given 10 compliments and one insult, what will you hold? What would you grab and treasure and value most? That one insult you grab and hold it as a treasure. I am not going to forget this! You said that thing to me. I am not going to forget this! I will never forget!
You do not forget, but keep boiling the insult inside. Who is getting affected, you know? We take such vows, such promises to hold on to the negatives. Yoga is something that sets the clock back, that turns the wheel around, from holding on to the negative, you move on to the positive.

Watch the children, they cry and the next minute they start laughing. 10 kids are fighting, you think they are fighting and you try to separate them, they will cry and want to stay together and play. But as adults if you have an argument with somebody, you will not see their face may be for many months or even years? You try to stay with it. But kids are not like that. They hold on to the positive. Become like children again in life. Can you? You know, today make this resolution. Today, come what may, I am going to be like a kid! I am going to be like a child again. What are you in this whole universe. You are nothing! Billions of years have passed, billions of people have come on the planet, they have lived and died and gone, and yet we think we are somebody! Who are you? Wake up and ask this question. Who am I? What is my life in the context of this whole creation. Not even a speek of dust! This awareness will make us lively, lighter and more beautiful! Can’t we become like that? [Yessss!]

See your life with the context of the creation, in the context of the universe. Your whole vision changes. All these small difficulties if you see.. will no longer touch you. They will come… they will just come and go!

The same thing is true in relationship, we must remember, never hurt a man’s ego and never hurt a woman’s emotions! Don’t play with her emotions and don’t play with his ego. A man can take up any ego beating from anybody, but not from his own wife. This is just my analysis, I have no experience in this! If it is wrong, you should tell me!

You know, if a wife starts telling the husband, ‘you are useless, you are stupid, you are good for nothing, you do that, you look at that person.. that man is better, you are not doing anything.’ Then, he can’t stand that. So even if the whole world says that he is stupid, the wife should say that he is a real wise man! Man expects upliftment from his woman, his wife. Wife should always encourage the man. Even in the worst condition.. when his heart is broken, when he feels down, he feels depressed, the wife can uplift him.

And same with the man. You know, the wife can come and complain about her brother, mother, father or anybody to him, but he should not complain about her in-laws. He is into trouble! The moment he says “yes”, your brother, or mother, or father did this thing to me she will become defensive. She will get hurt. She has to defend her family her parent’s house. She will always be emotionally attached to her parents and she will defend them. So men should not point any mistake on his own in-laws. Then things will be less rough! You know. it happens in life!

But see life in a broader perspective, a bigger vision. The aim of The Art of Living is to make your life a celebration! It gives you such an inner strength, that nobody can take that smile away from you. Do you all want such a strength? [Yesss !]
Have I covered all your topics? What I have not covered? .[Devotion]

Devotion is what you are, your simplest state. The simplest form of love, when you feel totally at home, is called Devotion. And yoga. You know every child is a yogi. Every baby has done all yoga asanas, exercise and everything. Have you noticed when a baby is born, it comes with this mudra, it is called Adi mudra. And it sleeps with Chin mai mudra. If you observe a child from the time its born to the age of 3, it has done all yoga postures, breathing exercises, everything. So you all have done this.

If you observe the nature, the nature and animals teach you a lot. All the animals in the creation sleep on their tummy. No animal sleeps on its back. Is there any animal that sleeps on its back? [From audience: My dog sleeps on its back.] Dog? They just go on their back and sometime roll, but they sleep on their tummy, if you notice. You know, if they have eaten something wrong, if they are not comfortable, then they go on their back, then they move on their back. But normally all the animals sleep on their tummy. When the child is born, it naturally sleeps on its tummy. Isn’t it? Mother turns the child and the Dad comes and again turns it around So its good to sleep on the belly. And the child does all the yoga postures. See even if a child is on its back, it lifts its leg up, and the neck is up, it is not in the ground, and it does the noukasana. Then it goes on the tummy and with the hands it does the Bhujangasana. It then does the side twist [Guruji gives the description with posture.] And all other yoga exercises. Everyone of us have done it when we were children.

你知道神(GOD)的意思是什麼嗎?G- Generator(生產者), O- Operator(操作者), D- Destroyer (摧毀者),形成GOD(神)。

18 Principles of a Spiritual Life 靈性生活的18個法則

18 Principles of a Spiritual Life

- By H. H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is both visionary and practical. At the dawn of the new millennium, he calls for a return to the timeless values common to all religious traditions as a means to resolving conflict in the world today. He recognizes that this begins with individuals who embody those values in their own lives. In guiding people around the globe to finding this life for themselves, Sri Sri offers the eighteen principles of the spiritual path.

When attention is given to the spiritual aspect of one’s life, it brings responsibility, a sense of belongingness, and compassion and caring for the whole of humanity. Spirit upholds and sustains life. It makes you strong and solid. It breaks down the narrow boundaries of cast, creed, religion and nationality and gives you an awareness of life present everywhere. It is only through this awareness, this uplifting of consciousness, that wars can be eliminated and human rights restored in the world today. How can these things be achieved? What are the main principles of a spiritual life?

1. Confidence

The first principle of the spiritual path is to have confidence in yourself. Without confidence, achievement does not come. Doubt is what opposes confidence. Once you eliminate the negative, you will see that the positive has already happened. When doubt clears, confidence is there. So to gain confidence, you must understand what doubt is.
If you observe the nature of doubt, it is always about something positive. You never doubt what is negative. You know this from your experience. You doubt someone’s honesty, but you never doubt dishonesty. You doubt the goodness of other people, but you never doubt their bad qualities. If someone says, “I love you very much,” you say, “Really?” But if someone says, “I hate you,” you never say, “Do you really?” Understand your doubt as questioning the positive and having confidence in the negative, and know that if you are having doubt, there must be something good present. Approached in this way, doubt gives you a means to move ahead. I am not telling you to drop your doubt. Doubt as much as you can! Give it your 100%. That will help you through it. Once you cross this barrier of doubt, then further progress comes.
2.Stop Blaming Others and Yourself

The next principle is to stop blaming others and yourself. The spiritual journey is a journey to the Self, and when you are engaged in blaming yourself, you will not want to approach the Self. You will not be attracted to that. Without this movement toward the Self, toward spirit, you have a journey toward matter. The joy you get from matter is tiring. The joy you get from spirit is uplifting. You will find negative qualities within yourself, but you don’t need to blame yourself for them. Whenever you blame yourself, you are bound to blame the other, because self-blame cannot stand for too long. You will find reason to escape from it by hooking it onto someone else. This causes hatred to arise. And whenever you blame someone else, you are preparing again to blame yourself. There is so much blame being given today that it is dampening the consciousness of the whole world.

3.Praise Other and Yourself

The third principle is praise yourself and praise others. Praising others goes a step beyond not blaming others. Praising kindles spirit and the presence of spirit is uplifting to yourself, to the other, and the entire environment. In praising yourself or another, a space is created within you that is filled with joy. If you can praise yourself, you won’t need praise from others. Often we think that praising ourself is ego, but, in fact, ego cannot praise itself. Rather it hopes for praise from others. And understand that all praise goes to the Divine anyway. If you say you have beautiful eyes, who made them? Every praise goes to the Divine, the Maker. The act of offering praise expands consciousness. Something inside you opens up. Blaming shrinks consciousness. Since the spiritual dimension is an expansion of consciousness, of the mind, we do not want to counter that by blaming. Sincerely offer praise to someone and see how you feel.

Sincerity is the fourth principle. In all things, be sincere. Do not fool yourself and do not try to fool anyone else. You are not on the spiritual path for anyone else’s sake. Spiritual seeking without sincerity is empty. It brings no benefits. With sincerity, it brings peace, happiness and joy you can find in no other way on this planet.

The fifth principle of the spiritual path is responsibility. The spiritual path is not escape from responsibility, but taking responsibility. However much responsibility you have taken for your life, by that much you are on the path. If you think it is difficult to manage what has been given to you to do, more will be given! People mistakenly think that being spiritual is an escape from hard work. No. The spiritual path is marked by effective and
dynamic activity.

6.Let Go of the Past

The sixth principle of spiritual life is the ability to let go of the past. See the entire past as a dream. Then you come to the present moment. You will find it is not necessary to make an effort to be in the present. The moment you let go of the past, your mind comes to the present on its own. In the present moment, spirit is kindled—even a little spark is made into a glow. When you cling to the past, the spark is covered with ashes. Be in the present and blow away the ashes of the past.

You need to know how to create a harmonious environment around you. You may think that your environment creates you, but in truth, you create your environment. See that what is, is. The acceptance of what is has two aspects. The first is the acceptance of the present moment as inevitable. It has happened as it happened. If you want it to be different, it can only become different in the next moment. Only when you accept what is and become calm, can you effectively change anything. The second aspect is to accept other people as they are. Whatever behavior they are exhibiting, see that it is the best that they have to offer in that moment. Be analytical. Look for possible explanations for their actions. And simultaneously take responsibility for your own. In this way, acceptance becomes dynamic and your environment becomes harmonious.

8.Confirmation of Your Own Death

The eighth principle of spiritual life is confirmation of death, the understanding that you are going to die one day. Because there is something deep within us that does not die, we may not fully comprehend the fact of our own death. The confirmation of death can bring you to the present moment. It can take you out of all the small temptations that keep you away from the present. Once you know that you are going to die, then the future will not haunt you.

9.Impermanence of Life

The ninth principle is the impermanence of all that exists right now—the impermanence of situations, circumstances, emotions and people around you. Knowing that all this is impermanent raises the level of spirit. You can act with more energy, enthusiasm and vigor. We think that if we recognize that everything is impermanent, it will bring down our enthusiasm and lead us to a state of apathy. No. The correct understanding of impermanence kindles spirit. Whenever spirit is kindled, you feel uplifted. Enthusiasm and
dynamism are present.

Trust the supreme and infinite Intelligence which has formed this entire creation, from the cosmic display to the interplay of genes and atoms and molecules. Just in the arrangement of electrons, something becomes a flower and something else becomes a stone, something is gold and something else is charcoal. See that there is a basic substratum, an underlying intelligence, a unity, in this entire creation. And see that it is lively. We don’t see the universe as a living thing. We see only matter everywhere; in our eyes only objects appear. We know there is a magnetic field in creation, but we often
see it as a dead field. Pure consciousness, that which is the basis of mind, that of which you are a part and everyone else is a part, is such a field and it is alive. Understanding, accepting and trusting the Intelligence which creates and sustains all things is the tenth principle of spiritual life.

11.Unity in Creation

When the human mind is stressed and tense, it judges, discriminates, loves this, doesn’t love that, makes boundaries. And in so doing, it removes itself from existence. This removal of existence from the flow of existence is called separation, but it is only apparent. Separation from existence is not possible. If a portion of a circle is removed, there is no longer a circle. See that you are part of existence, a fragment of the _expression of the supreme Intelligence, the unifying force which underlies all of creation, all that is. This is the eleventh principle.

12.Your Nature is Love and Peace

When you understand the unity in creation, you don’t have to make an effort to love others. Love is your nature. Love is what there is. Nothing other than love exists. See that love is not an action that you do, not a moral obligation that you must carry out. See that you exist in love and everything else exists in love. And know that peace is also your nature. At any moment, in any place, you can just sit and let go, knowing inside you there is a pure clear space, vast and deep. That inner space is what you are. When you feel this, you are in touch with your spiritual dimension. ”I have come from peace, I am in peace, I’ll go back to peace. Peace is my origin and my goal. I am peace, I am space, I am love” This inner affirmation or experience makes you a seeker. Knowing that your nature is love and peace is the twelfth principle.

The thirteenth principle of spiritual life is finding a balance between activity and rest—between enjoying your world and coming back to your self, and finding a balance between silence and speech. If you kept silent all your life, never uttering a word, you would not necessarily be living the spiritual life. You have been given speech. You have been given talents and abilities. Make right use of these things you have been given and balance that with meditation, the self-referral aspect of your consciousness.

14.Self Enquiry

Self-enquiry is the next principle of spiritual life. Start with awareness of the feeling of your own body —your own skin, the feeling of your skin under your garments, and under the skin your muscles and nerves and then bones. Do not be insensitive to life, like an animal who only eats, drinks and sleeps. Observe every sensation. Have the keenest awareness. In knowing your own body, you will come to know spirit—that which is different from the body.

15.Dispassion and Maturity

Keen awareness comes with maturity, or you could say, with dispassion. Maturity and dispassion come together. You cannot be mature and not be dispassionate also. Dispassion is often wrongly understood to be a flat, dull state of mind or a negative mood. It has the connotation of being aloof and disinterested. This is not true. In dispassion, you are aware; you are intimate with yourself. In maturity there is no feverishness. In maturity there is royalty, there is freedom, there is understanding, there is mystery. This is the fifteenth principle of spiritual life, gaining dispassion and living maturely.

16.Appreciation of Beauty

The sixteenth principle of spiritual life is to acknowledge the beauty in creation, the beauty in every person, the beauty within you, and to know this beauty in the nature of spirit. The mind runs after beauty, appreciates beauty, but there is a difference between appreciating beauty and wanting to possess it. In wanting to possess beauty, we lose our dispassion. Know it is spirit that is beautiful. Wherever you perceive beauty, spirit is there. If someone is beautiful, it is because of the spirit in them. A dead body is never beautiful. Attributing beauty to spirit and differentiating that from matter takes you a long way on the spiritual path.

17.Worshipfulness and Honor

The appreciation of beauty brings worshipfulness. You worship beauty, you adore it. Adoring and worshiping everything in creation as a reflection of the Creator is the next principle of spiritual life. And honor everything. Honoring is more than an emotional response. It is an attitude. It indicates a balanced understanding of life. When respect and love are both present, that brings honor. When there is honor, the mind is one hundred percent present and a sense of sacredness comes. Love and respect bring honor and honor brings sacredness. You cannot feel for something and not feel its sacredness. Sacredness brings alertness in the consciousness. Awareness comes.

18.Life is Imperishable

The final principle of spiritual life is knowing that life is imperishable. This is totally contradictory to the principle of knowing that life is impermanent, that everything is perishable. Now we say that life is imperishable; nothing can happen to it. Truth is always contradictory.

6. 放下過去 (let go of the past)

了知為何,然後如實接受(what is, is).

8. 確認人將一死 (confirmation of your own death)

9. 人生無常 (impermanence of life)

12. 你的本性就是愛和安詳 (your nature is love and peace)

16. 欣賞美 (appreciation of beauty)

18. 生命是永恆不朽 (life is imperishable)
